Face
What we call face is scientifically defined as the area starting from the chin to the roots of the hair. The eyes, two nostrils and the mouth are the five orifices found in the face.
The skin of the face is somewhat loose and pliable. As there is no deep fascia, wounds made to the face tend to bleed quite freely in this area.
Four muscles form the face. One of them is the frontal part of Occipitofrontalis muscle. This muscle consists of two parts: occipital part, also called the Occipitalis, and frontal part, also known as the Frontalis. These are the muscles that stretch across from the top of the head and form the scalp, as we know it. They are completely separate and are even supplied by different nerves. Nevertheless, the Galea aponeurotica, or better known as the aponeurosis of Galen, connects these two muscles. Galea aponeurotica is a fibromascular tissue that forms the scalp and stretches across the top half of the head. Such arrangement of two muscles is called digastrics muscle.
Nasal muscles, the mouth muscles and Zygomatic muscles are the other muscles that form the face. Zygomatic muscles extend from cheekbones, scientifically called Zygomatic arcs, to the corners of the mouth.
The external carotid artery is the only supplier of blood to the face and most of the scalp.
There is only one nerve that supplies the sensory feeling of the face; Trigeminal nerve, also known as the fifth cranial nerve. This nerve divides into three branches called Ophthalmic, Maxillary and Mandibular. Ophthalmic division covers the area above the eyes, forehead and part of the nose. The Maxillary division covers cheeks and some parts of the nose, conveniently known as the area below the nose and above the mouth. The Mandibular division covers the area lateral to the cheek bones all the way to the ears and the area inferior to the mouth. It does not, however, cover the protrusion on the jawbones, or the Mandibular angle.
